WOOD BLANK, SPALTED TAMARIND
Common Names: Tamarind
Scientific Name: Tamarindus indica
Janka Hardness: 2,690 lb
Region of Origin: Tropical Africa but also planted in other tropical areas worldwide. The tamarind tree produces brown, pod-like fruits that contain a sweet, tangy pulp, which is used in cuisines around the world.
Spalted Tamarind is a beautiful wood from Southeast Asia. This wood comes from logs found on the forest floor or was cut and then allowed to spalt in the jungle’s very damp, warm conditions. The colors and various line patterns are truly unique from one piece to another.
Color/Appearance: Pale yellows with dark grey to black streaks due to spalting. This wood is generally sapwood, with the heartwood having a reddish-brown color, sometimes with a purplish hue. Spalting patterns vary as this is due to a fungus within the tree.
Workability: Tamarind is generally considered difficult to work because of its density and interlocked grain. Heartword also has a pronounced blunting effect of cutting tools. Turns, glues, and finishes well and is able to take on a high natural polish. Tamarind turns well with sharp tools but is subject to the same challenges as any spalted wood. You can stabilize punky areas with two-part epoxy or cyanoacrylate (CA) glue and then rehone your tools and finish up with a light touch.
Toxicity: This wood has a slight chance of toxicity hazards due to spalting. It is always recommended to wear a dust mask or respirator when sanding and finishing with chemicals.
All NOVAs turning woods have a Sustainable Rating, NOT THREATENED. This material does not fall on the CITES list or IUCN list of threatened species.
