Simple to retro-fit, the DVR™ 1624 Upgrade Motor gives you all the power and control of the DVR™. It’s a simple, easy to fit bolt on intelligent motor. All the existing functions that you know and love from the 1624 lathe (such as the full swivel headstock) are included in the new upgrade. In addition, all of your existing NOVA accessories such as NOVA Chucks, centers, bed extensions and outriggers will still fit your lathe with the upgrade. It’s not only easy to convert to outrigger work for larger bowls and to extend spindle capacity with add on beds, but the lathe has the power and capacity to handle it with ease.

Easy to operate, the Striatech DVR™  motor transforms your NOVA 1624 into a SMART lathe, using Adaptive Control™ Software. The intelligent computerized control assists you with your turning. For instance, it will measure the weight of the workpiece and adjust performance accordingly. Has the ability to sense faults in the set up and will advise. Senses safety issues such as chisel dig ins and spindle lock, and will instantly shut down power to the spindle. With no belts or pulleys to cause vibration, a computer that automatically adjusts performance and solid cast iron construction, this DVR motor is one smooth operator. This delivers the ability to turn faster and more efficiently and cuts down on sanding time. The 5 favorite speeds function also enables you to program your most used speeds, finishing your project faster.

I have had my upgrade about 6 months and for the most part I am happy with it. I also have trouble with the forward/reverse feature, it takes several try’s to activate and seemingly could be fixed with firmware. . Also the actual RPM is 11.5% lower than the RPM indicated on the read out. It would seem that this error could be eliminated via software or firmware. One other thing that is somewhat troublesome is there is no panic button and the controls are in somewhat of an awkward position to reach in an emergency satiation. It would also be nice to know what all the menu settings actually do. What the heck does ktint+/-kprop mean. I don’t know but I can set it LOL. The manual is very sketchy and needs a rewrite.
Overall the upgrade works well and is a vast improvement over having to mess with the belts.
The documentation and the lack of support is the reason for only a 4 star rating.

I was one of the first customers to buy this upgrade. There were no instructions regarding where to place the electronics on the new motor, after trial and error I finally was able to place properly. I was a little disappointed with sales personnel as I called and left several messages to try to get instructions, never did get a call back, it seemed once I purchased the upgrade and it was shipped, I did not matter any longer. That is my grip, thanks for reading. I am pleased with the upgrade, it saves a lot of time in the shop. I also have the same problem with the forward to reverse button, takes several times of pressing it to get it to change. I also would like to have a better instruction on the menu as it is not easy to use. Overall though, I wouldn’t want to go back to pre-upgrade status.

Have used this approx. 6 months, after 18 months of switching belt pulleys to change speed. Somewhat pricey, but if you found your 1624 lathe on sale (I did), it’s still less expensive than buying a DVR lathe. Just for the option of changing speed with the punch of a button or twist of a knob, this upgrade is worth it. Mine is not always reliable at switching between forward & reverse; you have to watch the screen & sometimes punch the button several times until it happens. Overall though, I wouldn’t want to go back to pre-upgrade status.
