NOVA’s Viking 16” DVR Benchtop Drill Press is a 1HP, 150-3,000 RPM (programmable to 6,000) electronic variable speed machine, with a large easy to read display and a variety of intelligent features such as Auto Start feature for one handed drilling and Electronic Depth Stop. The built in LED lights, laser location makes it easy to see clearly and locate your center. The table can be tilted and rotated.

Overall evaluation: Great tool. I’ve owned a Jet and a Craftsman – the Nova is superior.
One piece of advice, like most top heavy objects, two people are needed to move it around safely. I substituted a keyless Llambrich JK chuck from Amazon for the included keyed chuck. Virtually no runout. Really nice – so quick and easy to change bits, but expensive ($260). However, if you do a lot of reverse drilling, use the keyed chuck
The good: 1) Vibration free 2) Really quiet 3) Laser guides very accurate 4) Electronic depth stop feature very handy 5) Speed control a joy to use 6) Display clean and crisp – very easy to read 7) On/Off switch on the side rear of drill press a good safety device if you have kids 8) The three LED lights are excellent at lighting up work area 9) Speed chart in manual very good reference (I reduced it on my computer, attached it to magnetic sheet and stuck them on the side of the drill press 10) Fit and finish very good 11) magnet on included adjustment wrench very handy. A small plastic “rack” with a magnet for the hex wrenches would have been a welcome bonus. I made one out of wood and double stick tape and added a magnet to the Llambrich wrench as well. Keeps all the adjustment tools handy.
The bad: 1) Instruction manual needs LOTS of work – poor explanations of features and how to use them – certainly not written by a trained technical writer – you’ll end up using trial and error. However illustrations are good. 2) Needs manual depth stop in addition to electronic one 3) Needs separate switches for work table lights and laser rather than the one sequential switch 4) Plans, or at least dimensions, for a base would have been nice since you have to mount the drill press on something and the average workbench is way too high. I designed and built one (height 23″) including a door for access and storage. No deal breaker but would have been a nice touch 5) Slots on table should be back to front rather than in an “X” pattern.
Electronics are sealed but only time will tell how long they will last. Hopefully for a long time.

This Drill Press has all the features I was looking for but there is plenty of room for improvement. The tool came covered in greasy fingerprints, even inside the protective coverings. There was a little rust, not much but enough to require some effort to remove. The headstock and the laser lights were not even close to alignment. No Allen key was provided to adjust the tile base. There was extra hardware for a part not included. The firmware upgrade cable is 4x too short. Information in the manual is well written but incomplete and inaccurate. Assemble instructions do not even indicate where to install the Chuck Key Holder. Laser light adjustment is listed on the wrong page. Parts on the Drill Press not described… But, after a long and frustrating setup, the tool has performed well so far and I am hoping for trouble free operation.
