Using the Nova Chuck to Make a Carving Fixture

Modifications to lathe helps Arthritis Suffer
J. Farrow
CHUCK_BENCH_FOR_CARVING_IDEA_2.jpg (3131 bytes)I regularly add carvings or embellishments
on my turned pieces. But keeping the piece
secured while I make the cuts (without damaging the piece!) has always been
a problem.... until I came up with this
handy fixture.

I've made this fixture using the Nova Chuck and a
spare Insert/Adaptor. This really holds the piece in
place for carving - and then all I have to do is mount
the chuck on the lathe to part it off!

CHUCK_BENCH_FOR_CARVING_IDEA_S.Hewitt_May_2000.jpg (3133 bytes)What you need:
A piece of heavy board
A metal plate or other way of
securing the insert
A spare insert/adaptor for your chuck

What a great idea, Thanks to Mr Hewitt!
User_Handy Hint_Guard Catch_August2001.jpg (191812 bytes)I've owned a Nova 3000 since 1997 - a great machine! I do have a touch of arthritis in the wrists, and so I've made a modification to the headstock that's helped me a lot - maybe some of your other owners might like to learn about them!   I've replaced the threaded knob on the guard headstock with a simple catch-case which opens and closes with the flick of a finger - much easier!

Plus, I've also made a couple of the levers longer and added a larger wooden on/off switch so that it's easier for my fingers to work the buttons and levers.

Thanks for that idea, Mr Farrow. We will certainly take the requirements of users with difficulties into consideration if/when we make any design modifications!
