"My favorite Jaws and a
tip:
My favorite jaws are the step jaws. I am relatively new to woodturning, but
the SuperNova Chuck with the Step Jaws
make it extremely easy for a pro or beginner to hold projects of different sizes and in
different ways. I like them the best because I can contract to hold several
different size bowl bottoms to hollow out a bowl. In addition to contracting, it can
also expand into dovetail groove, to hold a blank. This is very impressive how
little wood the jaws contact to have this amazingly powerful grip. When I started
this hobby, I thought I had to take a wooden faceplate and screw it to a metal faceplate.
Then glue a wooden faceplate to the bowl blank, which would have taken a long time
for the glue to dry before I could start turning my bowls. The SuperNova Chuck with
the Step Jaws make it extremely easy and
very quick to mount a bowl to the lathe.
My Tip:
When using the Step Jaws in the contracting mode, the jaws leave a little bit of
an impression where they held onto the wood. So I would highly suggest to stack the
Step Jaw onto the Cole Jaws. When the SuperNova Chuck is fitted with the Cole Jaws
and the Step Jaws at the same time, you
can save a lot of time an really make an impressive piece. First you use the Step
Jaws to create the majority of your bowl. Then, you simply turn the bowl over,
remount it on the Cole Jaws and finish the bottom. This allows you to easily and
quickly clean up the bottom and give your bowl a professional finish. I am
relatively new to woodturning, but using the SuperNova Chuck with the Step Jaws and Cole
Jaws, I have created very nice bowls already, and I have even turned several other people
onto woodturning.
